Harry Potter fans may never fully process the loss of actor Alan Rickman. His tenure as Professor Severus Snape cannot be topped.

Rickman gave it all to the role. However, when the fifth movie, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, went into production, his health wasn’t cooperating. He was diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer in 2005 and promptly began treatment. His prostate was eventually removed completely, and it was unclear whether he would return to production.

But Rickman soldiered on. And now we know his thoughts on the matter, thanks to The Guardian publishing some of his never-before-seen diaries.

Alan Rickman’s diary reveals why he didn’t give up on Severus Snape

Some weeks after he was released from the hospital, Rickman wrote a diary entry sharing why he decided to keep playing Professor Snape. “Finally, yes to HP 5,” he wrote. “The sensation is neither up nor down. The argument that wins is the one that says: ‘See it through. It’s your story.’”

loved reading that. It made my heart melt to know that he kept going because it was a story he wanted to bring to a proper close.

A couple of years later, the actor also wrote down his thoughts after reading Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” sharing that he always knew about the love story between Snape and Harry Potter’s mother Lily. “I have finished reading the last ‘Harry Potter’ book,” he wrote. “Snape dies heroically, Potter describes him to his children as one of the bravest men he ever knew and calls his son Albus Severus. This was a genuine rite of passage. One small piece of information from Jo Rowling seven years ago – Snape loved Lily – gave me a cliff edge to hang on to.”

These tiny glimpses into Rickman’s life bring me so much joy. It’s such a surreal feeling to know what his thoughts were at the time. And lucky for us fans, Henry Holt and Company will be releasing Madly Deeply: The Diaries of Alan Rickman, a collection of his handwritten diaries, in October.
