Pierce Brosnan doesn’t care who plays James Bond next

It’s been nearly a year since No Time To Die, the final James Bond movie featuring Daniel Craig as the famous super-spy, released in theaters, and people are beside themselves wondering who will replace him. After all, the more time that passes without MGM announcing who will next play James Bond, the more time we must spend not knowing. That’s time we could spend knowing who James Bond is. It’s very important and I think we’re all on the same page about that.

But there’s at least one person who’s bucking the trend: Pierce Brosnan, who played Bond from Goldeneye in 1995 through Die Another Die in 2002. “Who should do it?” he asked GQ in a preemptive strike. “I don’t care.” And I’ve got to quote this next part from GQ because the narration is everything:

"“It’ll be interesting to see who they get, who the man shall be,” Brosnan continues, in a tone that indicates it’s maybe not actually that interesting. “Whoever he be, I wish him well.”"

Honestly, it’s kind of nice to hear someone so closely associated with the Bond franchise admit that it’s just not that big a deal to them. They’ll cast someone else as Bond; the producers have said as much, but we shouldn’t expect a firm answer for a while. Interestingly, to hear Barbara Broccoli tell it to The Hollywood Reporter, they may look for a Bond villain before finding Bond himself:

"We always sit down with our writers, and we start by thinking about, ‘What is the world afraid of?’ We start by thinking about, ‘Who’s the Bond villain?’ We try to focus on that as the sort of uber story, and then we want to also look at Bond’s emotional life, and what he’ll be facing personally that he hasn’t had to deal with before. So he has two big issues in the films — one is the geopolitical one and the other is the personal one."

Basically, we’ll know when we know.

Pierce Brosnan enjoyed Skyfall, but No Time To Die

Back to Brosnan, he was also very honest about what he thought of Craig’s run of Bond movies. “I saw the last one,” he said, referring to No Time To Die, “and I saw Skyfall. I love Skyfall. I’m not too sure about the last one.”

"Daniel always gives of his heart. Very courageous, very strong. But…"

And he leaves what comes after the “but” to our imagination. Classy of him.

dark. Next. Whoever plays James Bond next is making at least a 10-year-commitment
