Game of Thrones alum Jerome Flynn joins Yellowstone prequel show
By Dan Selcke
House of the Dragon is the first show in a while — maybe since Game of Thrones — to command the attention of audiences en masse on such a broad scale. But it’s not the only hugely popular series on the air. Over on the Paramount Network, Yellowstone — about a Montana ranching family headed up by Kevin Costner — has become a monster hit, so much that there’s a prequel show on the way: 1923.
As the title implies, 1923 will be set during the ’20s, and will introduce us to a new generation of the Dutton family as they deal with pandemics, droughts, the end of Prohibition and the following Great Depression. Costner won’t be in it, but Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren will be, so the producers are keeping up the original show’s tradition of spotlighting movie stars of a certain age.
And of course, there are other players. One of them is Jerome Flynn, known to Game of Thrones fans as the mercenary Bronn. He’ll play Banner Creighton, whom Deadline calls “a hard-headed Scot with a brogue and the leader of the local sheep men.”
You gotta watch out for sheep men. Congrats to Flynn on landing a role on such a big show! 1923 is due out on Paramount+ this December.
Lena Headey to fight a serial killer, John Bradley is a hard-boiled cop
Flynn isn’t the only Game of Thrones veteran getting booked. Deadline also reports that Lena Headey (Cersei Lannister) will be appearing aside Shaun of the Dead’s Nick Frost in Svalta, about a family on summer vacation on a remote island. Things are going nicely until they discover that a serial killer is on the loose and that the locals have no interest in solving the problem.
Frost and Headey play the parents. Svalta sounds intense, but it’s going for more of a “comedic thriller” angle. It’ll film next year.
One more from Deadline before we go: John Bradley, who played Jon Snow’s bestie Samwell Tarly, has landed the lead role in North Shore, about a British detective sent to Australia to investigate the death of the daughter of a British cabinet minister.
Bradley’s character is named Max Wylie. At the time of the investigation, his wife is thinking of giving up on their marriage and his boss is wondering whether he has a future with the police force. Time for Bradley to get gritty!
There’s no release date for North Shore either, but it’s great to see Game of Thrones veterans landing so many high-profile gigs!
