Barry Keoghan had a cameo as the Joker in Matt Reeves’ movie The Batman. But apparently he first auditioned to play the Riddler, the main villain of that movie. His audition tape has been circulating online. Check it out:

The tape shows Keoghan swaggering down a hallway in green suspenders and a cane with “Danse Macabre” playing in the background. The unsolicited tape was sent to Reeves’ team after Keoghan heard about the movie. As we know, the role eventually went to Paul Dano.

Speaking to GQ, Keoghan simply said, “I wanted to be Riddler.” Although he didn’t get the part he wanted, The Batman team watched the tape and called Keoghan four months later with an offer to play the Joker.

Will Barry Keoghan return as the Joker in The Batman sequel?

Keoghan’s Joker appears only briefly at the end of The Batman, but he made an impact. Warner Bros. also released a deleted scene featuring the character showing that this version of Batman and the Joker already have a history with each other:

It’s unclear whether the upcoming sequel to The Batman will include Keoghan’s Joker. Keoghan says that Reeves has yet to contact him about returning for next movie, which was announced at CinemaCon shortly after The Batman was released.

Matt Reeves has expressed interest in bringing in Batman villains that have either never been seen on the big screen, like Hush, or have yet to be portrayed in realistic ways, like Mr. Freeze. If they do decide to use the Joker, they have an incredibly talented young actor ready to go.
