The Walking Dead kicked off its final run of episodes this past Sunday night, and things are off to an…interesting start. For a show that is airing the final eight episodes, the premiere episode, “Lockdown,” wasn’t as exciting as I was hoping, although maybe that’s just me.
That said, by the end of the episode I was cautiously optimistic moving towards the series finale. I believe that the creative team behind The Walking Dead knows what they are doing. Speaking of which, showrunner Angela Kang sat down with Deadline to talk all about the final season premiere and what the end holds for the flagship series. Find out what she had to say below!
Angela Kang discusses the end of The Walking Dead
Judith (Cailey Flemming) opened the newest Walking Dead episode with an emotional monologue that reflects back on the whole of the story. It was sad, beautiful and intentional. “Our characters are reckoning with how much have we changed over time, and who do we still want to be going forward? So, it felt like it lent itself well to thinking about what the past has meant and what it is and how does that defines us going forward,” said Kang. “We really love the idea of marrying that with a perspective that you might not expect, that sort of gives homage to the comics without being exactly of it.”
I was feeling a lot of emotions watching the montage. It was a trip down memory lane that I wasn’t ready for. I have been watching the show since day one, and it’s going to be so weird to see it end. I will say that it won’t really feel over for me until we see how Rick’s story ends.
When Kang was asked if any legacy characters might make an appearance in the final stretch of episodes, she kept pretty mum about it. “I know you have to ask that. I appreciate the question, but there are some things that are just too spoiler-y, so I can’t get into it.”
That means someone’s showing up, right? Tune in on Sundays to find out.
