Streaming Wars, Oct 2022: Dragons vs Rings vs serial killers vs Star Wars
By Dan Selcke
Between House of the Dragon, The Rings of Power, Star Wars, Andor, DAHMER and more, the streamers are bringing their A-games right about now.
Each month, we read over the latest dispatches from the front lines of the Streaming Wars and assess how the likes of Netflix, HBO Max, Disney+ and the rest are doing. Who won the day, who was defeated, and who’s biding their time? We mark it all down on this living graph, which changes every month.
How did the combatants fare in September of 2022? Take a look:
Paramount+
In September, Paramount+ brought us more episodes of Star Trek: Lower Decks as well as the final season of The Good Fight, among a few other originals. Eh. Points: +1
Netflix
Originals of note on Netflix in September include Cobra Kai season 5, The Great British Bakeoff, DAHMER and Blonde. You can always count on Netflix to bring a variety of content. Points: +2
Disney+
Disney+ got new episodes of She-Hulk, premiered the new series Star Wars: Andor, dropped Hocus Pocus 2 and got the streaming release of Thor: Love and Thunder. If you’re a Disney fan, there was lots to enjoy. Points: + 2
Hulu
September featured the returns of shows like The Handmaid’s Tale, Ramy, and Abbott Elementary, as well as brand new stuff like The Reboot and Hellraiser. Hulu is holding its own. Points: + 2
HBO Max
House of the Dragon is tearing it up on HBO Max. Beyond that, it got movies like Elvis and new seasons of shows like Los Espookys. And the service wasn’t quite as awash with bad PR as it was last month, although we’re still reeling a bit. Points: +2
Amazon Prime Video
Far and away the biggest original release on Amazon in September was The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, which has gone…pretty well. Critical and fan reception is mixed, but people are watching. Points: + 2
Apple TV+
New stuff came to Apple TV+ in September – See, Life by Ella, Sidney – but not much anybody has heard of. Points: + 1
Peacock
The big Peacock debut last month was Vampire Academy, although the service also got stuff like Meet Cute. S’all right. Points: + 1
