The Walking Dead only has seven episodes left, and the stakes are higher than ever. Any character could go at any moment, and considering that they’re going to be dealing with a new breed of zombie, they just might.

Remember at the end of The Walking Dead: World Beyond when we learned there was some faster, smarter kind of zombie running around France? They’re not the only variants on the scene. Showrunner Angela Kang spoke to Digital Spy about what to expect from these newly evolved walkers, and what it means for the rest of the season.

“There are some parts of the process that are like: it’s too secret of a creative conversation that I can’t get into. But what I’ll say is: we’re always looking for ways to kind of turn up the heat on our heroes,” Kang shared. “This season, one of the things that we have been doing is sort of an exploration of the past and the present. We open the season with sort of an exploration of the idea of lurkers, which are the ones that go dormant.”

The Walking Dead’s final episodes have a new breed of zombies

The exciting thing about these zombies is that they have always been out there, even if we haven’t seen them in a while. Our group is used to dealing with one type of zombie, so how will they fare when other variants are thrown into the mix?

“If you’ve been used to one set of rules for zombies, and you haven’t really encountered ones that do these other things, then some of your mechanisms for protecting yourself change,” Kang said. “It’s just in the spirit of exploring what’s out there. And for those who caught the end of World Beyond, we’ve seen that there may be a different variant that exists somewhere else, too. That’s just part of the fun.”

Given that Daryl is headed to Europe in his spinoff and will likely encounter the zombies we saw at the end of World Beyond, we’ll be seeing a lot more variants all around.

The Walking Dead is currently airing its final season on AMC and AMC+, be sure to catch new episodes every Sunday!
