The Wheel of Time cast and crew tease “massive” season 2
By Daniel Roman
It’s been nearly a year since season 1 of The Wheel of Time premiered on Prime Video, and we’ve finally gotten a glimpse at some of our first footage at season 2. Showrunner Rafe Judkins and several cast members appeared on a panel at New York City Comic Con this past weekend where they answered fan questions, teased what lies ahead for our heroes from the Two Rivers, and even debuted the first sizzle reel from the show’s second season, which you can watch right here:
The Wheel of Time panel gives first look at Mat and Elayne actors for season 2
Beyond Judkins, the panel included Madeleine Madden (Egwene), Marcus Rutherford (Perrin), and Daniel Henney (Lan), as well as newcomers Ceara Covney (Elayne Trakand) and Dónal Finn, who will be replacing Barney Harris as Mat Cauthon.
Though she wasn’t there in the flesh, Rosamund Pike did make an appearance via a pre-recorded message where she interviewed herself about what lies ahead for Moiraine. Season 1 ended with Moiraine had been severed (or shielded) from the One Power; from the sounds of things, she’ll have a lot to work through on that front. Pike said that Moiraine will be returning to her home city of Cairhien, a place beset by “stifling traditions where everyone plays mind games.” Moiraine will be struggling with the loss of her magic at the start of the season, and will be pushing away those closest to her, including her Warder, Lan.
That theme of isolation is something that will pervade the show’s second season, as our cast of characters are separated on different journeys. “I think a recurring theme for all the characters is to deal with this loneliness that they all face, whether that’s losing the One Power or losing their home or figuring out their destiny,” Madden said, per Entertainment Weekly. “Everyone’s isolated. But this is a really wonderful foundation for them to build themselves up, especially Egwene.”
The Wheel of Time season 2 has “a lot of screaming, crying, fighting, and two people talking in a room”
The panel also included our first glimpses of Finn and Covney in costume. A clip revealed Finn’s first scene in season 2, where Mat is conversing with Liandrin of the Red Ajah (Kate Fleetwood).
And here’s Covney, finally suited up for Elayne’s long-awaited debut:
“This season is a lot of screaming, crying, fighting, and two people talking in a room,” Rafe Judkins said during the panel. “We did build that groundwork. You know who these people are, and now you get to see them go on these journeys. The journeys Robert Jordan created are epic. It’s a gift for people who knows the books to watch the show, because they see contained in each of these characters the path that’s in front of them. In season 2, we’re on that path. By the end of the season, eight episodes later, it’s just massive. I’m excited for people to see it.”
We’re pretty excited too! No release date has yet been announced for The Wheel of Time season 2, but based on the fact that we’re starting to get footage, sometime next year seems like a safe bet.
