Outlander fans rejoice! Deadline reports that season 7 will bring back many fan-favorite characters from seasons past. The seventh season is currently filming in Scotland and is gearing up to be a wild ride.

Before I reveal which former cast members will return, I would like to speculate about how they are returning to the series, since some of the characters these actors played have died. Is it possible that they are doing a flashback? That seems likely, although there are other ways: Claire (Caitriona Balfe) could have a fever dream again and imagine some of them. Showrunner Matthew B. Roberts suggested another possibility in a statement:

"One of the many joys of our epic story is the element of time travel which allows us to revisit some of our favorite characters in different times and places, and we’re thrilled to welcome back so many familiar faces for Season 7."

One of the returnees is Andrew Whipp as Brian Fraser, Jamie’s (Sam Heughan) father. He hasn’t been in the series since 2014, so this might be a way to do a backdoor pilot to the prequel series centered on Jamie’s parents.

The possibilities are endless, and I haven’t yet revealed the entire returning cast list!

Outlander season 7 will recast the part of Jamie Fraser’s sister

Perhaps the most exciting return of the bunch is Graham McTavish, who will reprise his role as Dougal MacKenzie, Jamie’s uncle. I love McTavish and am so excited to continue seeing him on the small screen. Most recently, he’s been on House of the Dragon, but it will be wonderful to see him play Dougal once again.

Also returning will be Nell Hudson as Laoghaire Fraser; Steven Cree as Old Ian Murray; Layla Burns as Joan MacKimmie; and Lotte Verbeek as Geillis Duncan. They’ve all played instrumental roles (good and bad) in the life of the Frasers, and it is going to be quite an exciting moment to see how they are brought back into the fold.

New actors will join the cast, including Gloria Obianyo as Mercy Woodcock, a free Black woman trying to work her way through life in Colonial America; Chris Fulton as Rob Cameron, a new friend of Roger and Brianna; and Dairmaid Murtagh as Buck MacKenzie, Dougal MacKenzie and Geillis Duncan’s illegitimate son.

Jamie’s sister Jenny Murray will also return. She was formerly played by Werewolf by Night star Laura Donnelly but has been recast with Kristen Atherton.

As of now, there is no premiere date for Outlander season 7, but we will be anxiously awaiting news on that front! And the minute we know, you’ll know too.
