Could Henry Cavill return as Superman? According to an exclusive by The Hollywood Reporter, there is an “intense desire” to return him to the fold.

At the center of all this is Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, who has a grand vision for a Black Adam versus Superman movie. He wants to help guide the DCEU now that it’s going through some changes after Discovery merged with Warner Bros., the studio in charge of DC movies.

Meanwhile, Matt Reeves hopes to expand The Batman universe with movies and series based on Batman villains, and James Gunn is planning a couple of DC projects of his own. As former DC head Walter Hamada exits and new Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav tries to assert control, things are changing by the moment. “Right now it’s the Wild West,” said one insider. “Everyone is trying to grab as much as they can. And this is exactly what happens in a leadership vacuum.”

Chaos at Warner Bros. as executives try to reshape the future of DC movies

Zaslav and company really want Cavill to reprise his role as Superman. Fans have also wanted that for a while. The question is what form it would take. As mentioned, the Rock wants Superman to fight Black Adam. THR has also heard of a Man of Steel sequel produced by Charles Roven; that movie is currently looking for writers. Perhaps both?

Apparently there is a “surprise” Superman cameo in Black Adam (one that the Rock had to fight to get included). Perhaps that will get the ball rolling.

It’s unclear whether this will affect another Superman project to be written by Ta-Nehisi Coates and produced by J.J. Abrams. This one intends to introduce a Black Superman and would exist separately from the rest of the DCEU, sort of like 2019’s Joker movie, which also has a sequel on the way.
