Watch new trailers for Final Fantasy XVI, Resident Evil 4, and Silent Hill
By Daniel Roman
It’s a good week for the gamers! New trailers and announcements abound as game studios do their best to get us hyped for the biggest new titles coming out in 2023. Square Enix has just unveiled a brand new trailer for Final Fantasy XVI, which delves into the world and lore of the game’s medieval setting. We see new nations, new Eikons (summons), and fraught geopolitics. I can’t lie, it kind of gives off Game of Thrones vibes, which obviously I am here for. It even sounds like they may have gotten Dagmer Cleftjaw actor Ralph Ineson to lend his gravelly voice talents. Check it out:
Final Fantasy returns to its medieval roots in Final Fantasy FFXVI
Final Fantasy is a series that has bounced back and forth between more medieval time periods and modern ones, but it looks as though the old school style of kingdoms clashing will be at the forefront of the series’ latest mainline installment. Final Fantasy XVI will center around Clive Rosefield, a noble who is capable of transforming into a giant creature known as an Eikon. These are the classic Final Fantasy summons, reimagined as a literal transformation for certain characters. The clash of the titans is on!
Final Fantasy XVI is due out exclusively on PlayStation 5 in Summer 2023. According to Kotaku, director Hiroshi Takai said the game’s development team is in the home stretch of production, and are now focusing on debugging the game and making “final adjustments.”
Resident Evil 4 looks scarier than ever in new remake trailer
Final Fantasy isn’t the only series getting some love this past week; Capcom also unveiled a brand new trailer for its upcoming remake of Resident Evil 4. The revolutionary game which redefined the survival horror genre with its over-the-shoulder camera and spooky cult village is getting a rework from the ground up, similar to Capcom’s previous remakes of Resident Evil 2 and 3.
From the looks of things, RE4 is getting a bit more than just a fresh coat of paint. The trailer shows off some new story developments, such as the president’s daughter Ashley being seemingly infected by the Las Plagas parasite. IGN has posted a hands-on preview that shows off the remake’s improved gameplay, and how the horror vibes appear to be dialed up even more from the original thanks to more dynamic lighting and sound design.
The Resident Evil 4 remake is slated for release on March 23, 2023. Though it was initially a PlayStation 5 exclusive, it has since been announced that it will also be releasing on PlayStation 4.
Multiple new Silent Hill games are on the way
Last but certainly not least, Konami announced a slew of new Silent Hill content during their Silent Hill Transmission event. Considered one of the pinnacles of the survival horror genre alongside Resident Evil, Silent Hill has been on hiatus for nearly a decade. That makes the announcement of several new games extremely exciting; the fans have been waiting!
The two biggest reveals are that Konami is developing both a remake of the classic Silent Hill 2 as well as a new mainline game with an entirely new story set in 1960s Japan titled Silent Hill f. Both look properly terrifying.
It was also announced that there are two other smaller games in the works: Silent Hill: Townfall and Silent Hill Ascension, the latter of which is being developed as an interactive experience with J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Games. No hard details were announced in regards to gameplay or even what platforms we should expect to see those two games on, but it’s still cool to know they’re in the works.
But that’s not all! Konami also announced that it’s producing a new Silent Hill movie based on Silent Hill 2. Christophe Gans, the director of the 2006 Silent Hill movie, is returning to helm Return to Silent Hill. Konami teased the new movie in a video which includes interviews with director and producer Victor Hadida:
Return to Silent Hill has no release date as of this writing, but with so much other content from the spooky game universe in the works, fans will have plenty to tide them over in the meantime.
