We’ve been waiting months to get updates on Star Wars films, and we might finally have one! Deadline reports that Ms. Marvel director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is directing a new Star Wars film, with Leftovers and Watchmen creator Damon Lindelof penning the script with Justin Britt-Gibson.
If you’re wondering what the movie will be about, you’re among the curious majority, although it’s reportedly set after the end of the Skywalker Saga, which wrapped up in Episode XI. Per The Hollywood Reporter, the idea came together after Lucasfilm assembled a secret writers’ room of TV writers to talk all things Star Wars. The studio is dead set on getting this to work.
We haven’t had a Star Wars film since 2019, although there have been a few false starts. At one point The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson was going to helm a new trilogy; the director maintains he’ll someday get around to it, but we haven’t heard anything official in a while. Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss were also signed up for a trilogy, but they left to work on The Three-Body Problem for Netflix. Patty Jenkins was going to make a Rogue Squadron movie, but that’s been removed from Disney’s schedule. And Taika Waititi is supposedly working on something. With the Lindelof-Obaid-Chinoy movie actually go?
Lucasfilm assembled a team of TV writers to come up with the next Star Wars movie
As a fellow Pakistani, I am beyond ecstatic to see Obaid-Chinoy so in demand. She just came off directing several episodes of Ms. Marvel, and now Disney is roping her into Star Wars; how cool is that?!
Lucasfilm has been focused on Star Wars TV for a while, with shows like The Mandalorian and Andor taking precedence over the movies, which have taken a backseat. But that doesn’t doesn’t mean they’re gone forever.
Stay tuned for more updates regarding the untitled Star Wars project; we’re hoping to learn more in the coming days and months!
