House of the Dragon physical release will not feature deleted scenes
By Daniel Roman
Good news for the collector crowd: HBO has just announced the release date for the House of the Dragon season 1 Blu-ray, as well as a slew of special features that will be available on it. The news comes mere days after the season 1 finale, which saw dragons clash above Storm’s End and Rhaenyra Targaryen don the crown of her father King Viserys. So while the journey may have ended for now, you’ll soon be able to enjoy it in high quality whenever you please, and without needing an HBO and HBO Max subscription.
House of the Dragon: The Complete First Season is due out on December 20, and is already available for pre-order on Amazon. The series will be releasing in a variety of formats, including Blu-ray, DVD, and a 4k UHD steelbook. Both the Blu-ray and steelbook releases also come with a code for a digital download of the season as well, though Polygon notes that it is only valid in the United States.
House of the Dragon physical release special features revealed
While the House of the Dragon physical release will mark the first time that viewers will be able to watch the series at home in high quality without an HBO Max subscription, I doubt I’m alone in saying that one of the biggest draws for this kind of release is the special features. House of the Dragon: The Complete First Season will not skimp in this regard; the set will include around 73 minutes of featurettes, two of which were created exclusively for the physical release. Here’s the rundown:
- Welcome to Westeros
- Returning to the Seven Kingdoms
- A New Reign
- Returning to Westeros
- Before the Dance: An Illustrated History with George R.R. Martin
- Height of an Empire
- Noble Houses
- Familiar Places
- Introducing the Characters
However, there is one big omission: there are no deleted scenes. Throughout House of the Dragon season 1, viewers have gradually gotten wind of quite a few moments that didn’t make it into the final show, such as when young Rhaenyra helped Alicent Hightower prepare for her wedding to King Viserys, or when Daemon Targaryen comforted his daughters Baela and Rhaena after their mother’s death. It’s a little sad that we won’t get to see how these moments played out on the physical release, but then again, Westeros does have a habit of breaking hearts.
