The House of the Dragon season 1 finale featured many epic moments, but one that had a lot of people talking was when Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) ventured into a cavern to spend some quality time with Vermithor, the aging dragon once ridden by his grandfather Jaehaerys. Since the death of his previous rider, Vermithor has resided alone in a cavern on Dragonstone. But as we see in the finale, he’s seemingly got a soft spot for certain lullabies sung in High Valyrian.
If you’ve been curious about the song that Daemon sings, look no further. We have the translation of the High Valyrian words right here. Titled “Hāros Bartossi” (With Three Heads), the song was written by Ti Mikkel and translated by longtime Game of Thrones conlanger David J. Peterson. Here are the High Valyrian and Engish versions of the song, as recorded on archiveofourown.org by Peterson:
Valyrian
Drakari pykiros
Tīkummo jemiros
Yn lantyz bartossa
Saelot vāedis
Hen ñuhā elēnī:
Perzyssy vestretis
Se gēlȳn irūdaks
Ānogrose
Perzyro udrȳssi
Ezīmptos laehossi
Hārossa letagon
Aōt vāedan
Hae mērot gierūli:
Se hāros bartossi
Prūmȳsa sōvīli
Gevī dāerī
English
Fire breather
Winged leader
But two heads
To a third sing
From my voice:
The fires have spoken
And the price has been paid
With blood magic
With words of flame
With clear eyes
To bind the three
To you I sing
As one we gather
And with three heads
We shall fly as we were destined
Beautifully, freely
What is the song Daemon sings to Vermithor? Let’s look over the translation!
Peterson also includes this note on the website, giving a behind the scenes look at how the song was created:
"This is the song Daemon is singing. Ti wrote the original English lyrics, which was three stanzas. I made sure they worked in Valyrian and added a fourth stanza to help clean things up, as more words required to get the meaning that was packed into the original English. It was nice to hear it sung so clearly!"
Now get to practicing your own rendition so you can impress your friends. Or woo a dragon into letting you pet it. That’s the nice thing about these High Valyrian songs: you never know when they’ll come in handy.
