Marvel top boss Kevin Feige has weighed in on James Gunn’s move to DC. Gunn’s longtime collaboration with Marvel is coming to an end as the Guardians of the Galaxy director was hired by Warner Bros. Discovery to lead DC Studios.
Feige spoke to The Hollywood Reporter a day after the premiere of Marvel’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. He was supportive of Gunn’s new endeavor and said that he was looking forward to what the director does:
"We have a wonderful thing called the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special coming out. We have a wonderful thing called Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 coming out in May. How he’ll have any time to work on DC until May I don’t know, but once he does have the time I’ll be very excited. I’ll be first in line."
Kevin Feige and James Gunn are two stalwarts of the comic book movie-making business, and they have long maintained that their is no bad blood between Marvel and DC.
Kevin Feige visited the set of James Gunn’s DC movie The Suicide Squad
Gunn has previously worked with DC on The Suicide Squad, which got its own John Cena-led spinoff series, Peacemaker. Feige and Marvel executive producer Louis D’Esposito even visited the set of The Suicide Squad. “Kevin and Lou were on set, and the day they came to set, we revealed Starro,” Gunn said in a 2021 The Hollywood Reporter interview. “I was like, ‘Oh boy.’ I mean, I knew I could trust them, and of course, I was able to trust them.”
Gunn will serve as the co-chair and co-CEO of DC Studios along with producer Peter Safran. The announcement was made one week after former DC Films head Walter Hamada departed the company over creative differences regarding the cancelation of Batgirl.
James Gunn’s deal runs four years. During that time, at least, he will be exclusive to DC.
