All the dragons we’ve met on House of the Dragon (and their riders)
Now that civil war has come to House of the Dragon, we will be seeing a lot of dragon-on-dragon combat moving forward. Although Rhaenyra’s black faction has more dragons at their disposal, we saw in the finale how much size matters. During the black war council, Daemon name drops a few new dragons that we never saw in the first season but may play a role going forward.
While we settle into the long wait between seasons 1 and 2, let’s go over every dragon we met, every dragon that was mentioned, and ones that weren’t mentioned but that we’re probably going to meet anyway.
The Greens (4 Dragons)
Vhagar
The largest, oldest and most powerful dragon in the world has belonged to the greens since Aemond Targaryen bonded with her in Episode 7. Vhagar was one of the three dragons Aegon the Conqueror and his sisters used to bring Westeros to its knees over 100 years before the events of the show. At this point in House of the Dragon, Vhagar is over 170 years old and has taken part in many battles.
In the finale, we saw how Vhagar can make a huge difference in any battle due to her monstrous size and strength. We also saw that the dragons sometimes act on their own accord, as Aemond and Luke were trying to stop their mounts from attacking each other to no avail. Now that the blacks have lost a dragon rider, they will likely think twice about how they make their war plans with Vhagar in the back of their minds.
Sunfyre
We only saw brief glimpses of Sunfyre in background shots of Episode 7. He is the mount of King Aegon II.
With bright golden scales, Sunfyre is regarded as one of the most beautiful dragons in the world. In George R.R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood, Aegon redesigns the Targaryen sigil so it’s a golden dragon rather than a red one, to reflect the image of Sunfyre.
Not much else is known about the beast except that he is likely housed in the Dragonpit in King’s Landing. We can expect to see him a lot more in season 2 and beyond.
Dreamfyre
We briefly glimpsed Dreamfyre in Episode 5, when a young Aemond stole into the depths of the Dragonpit to try and bond with a dragon. This bright blue she-dragon used to be the mount of Rhaena Targaryen, a princess and daughter of King Aenys Targaryen, decades prior to the events of House of the Dragon. Now, she is the mount of Queen Helaena Targaryen and is about 100 years old at the time of the season finale. Dreamfyre is also possibly the mother of Daenerys’s dragons Drogon, Rhaegal and Viseryon, although that story isn’t confirmed.
We’ve seen Dreamfyre in background shots next to Sunfyre. With Helaena’s affection for animals, hopefully we will get to see her relationship with Dreamfyre in the future.
Tessarion
Daeron Targaryen, the fourth child of Alicent Hightower and King Viserys, has yet to make his appearance on House of the Dragon, but showrunner Ryan Condal has confirmed that the’ll show up in season 2. Presumably he’s been in Oldtown this entire time, being fostered with Alicent’s relatives.
In the finale, Daemon says that the greens have four dragons, and three of them are adults. We know that Vhagar and Dreamfyre are over 100 years old and Sunfyre appears old enough to ride as well. This leaves Tessarion, the dragon ridden by Daeron.
Tessarion is a bright blue she-dragon who breaths blue flame. That could make for some interesting visuals. She’s smaller than some of the other dragons in the show, but she’s very nimble in the air.
