It was only a matter of time, but it finally happened: The CW has officially decided to end Stargirl. According to Deadline, the series will wrap up with its third season, which is currently airing on The CW.
New episodes will air through December 7, so there’s still some time before we big our final goodbyes. I can’t say I’m surprised, as this cancellation comes after several CW shows were axed in the wake of changes at the network. Stargirl was the next one in line. At this point, Superman & Lois is one of the only big DC shows left no The CW that might actually keep going.
So Stargirl’s cancellation isn’t a complete shocker. But it’s still a bittersweet moment as Stargirl had made a special place in my heart.
Stargirl to end with season 3
Geoff Johns created Stargirl, which stars Brec Bassinger as the title character. The series is as CW as it gets, including a group of angsty teens stumbling into superpowers and united against a common villain.
This cancellation occurred about a month after Nexstar Media Group bought out The CW. Shows like The Flash, Riverdale, and Nancy Drew are also heading into their final seasons, so it was only a matter of time before Stargirl came to an end.
According to Deadline, the team behind the series was given an early heads-up that the third season could be the show’s last and to write it as such. In a world where shows get canceled mid-season too often, this is nice to hear. There is nothing worse than an abrupt ending and no closure!
Stargirl season 3 was written to serve as the end of the series
“Stargirl has always held a special place in my heart for many reasons,” Johns shared. “With all the brewing changes at the network, we were aware this was possibly the last season, so we wrote with that in mind and have delivered what I believe to be the best season of Stargirl yet, with complete creative closure. The cast and crew are extraordinary, and I’d like to thank them for helping me bring this series to life.”
Bassinger gave her thoughts as well:
"Getting to play Stargirl and be a part of the DC Universe has been the greatest honor, and I am so grateful for every moment of it. I would like to thank our fearless leader Geoff Johns, along with WBTV, The CW, the cast and crew of Stargirl, and of course, the fans. Thank you. This show will forever live in my heart."
Stargirl won’t be the last CW show to end/get canceled in the near future. But that’ll be then. For now, we must prepare to say goodbye to Stargirl; it’s been a good run!
