Henry Cavill denies rumors he’s joining House of the Dragon
By Daniel Roman
If you’re still in a state of shock over the news that Henry Cavill is leaving The Witcher, you’re not alone. Netflix shocked fans over the weekend with a surprise announcement that the star of their hit fantasy show would not be returning for season 4 ,and will instead be replaced by Hunger Games star Liam Hemsworth.
The rumor mill has been spinning overtime since the news broke. There are claims that Cavill had a creative dispute with showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich, that he’s ditching The Witcher in order to reprise the role of Superman in the DCEU, or even that Cavill has been tapped to join the cast of HBO’s fantasy show House of the Dragon.
Let’s all take a breath for a minute. Cavill’s official statement about leaving the show gives no reason for his departure, and until we hear something directly from him, we have to take most of this stuff with a grain of salt. Case in point: in a recent interview with the Happy Sad Confused podcast’s Josh Horowitz, Cavill shot down those rumors that he was joining the case of House of the Dragon.
Henry Cavill: “I think it would be cool to be in Westeros, I really do”
“To be fair, when I was watching House of the Dragon, I was like ‘I feel like a lot of these guys could make really good Witchers,'” Cavill replied with a laugh when put on the spot by Horowitz. “I think it would be cool to be in Westeros, I really do. I don’t think there’s a place for me in there, though.”
So alas, as things stand Henry Cavill isn’t slated to join House of the Dragon anytime soon. This isn’t to say it’s impossible he’ll ever appear on the series, especially if it leaps into different periods of Targaryen history as showrunner Ryan Condal has hinted. The most prominent fan cast for Cavill is as Aegon the Conqueror, and hey, I wouldn’t hate it.
But as things stand, don’t hold your breath that Henry Cavill is joining House of the Dragon. We’ll see the actor’s final run as Geralt of Rivia when season 3 of The Witcher drops in summer 2023.
