Hannibal creator making a Friday the 13th prequel series for Peacock
By Dan Selcke
Just the other week, Peacock started streaming Halloween Ends, the latest (possibly last?) film in the long-running Halloween franchise. Apparently Peacock wants to corner the market on horror revivals, because The A.V. Club reports that it’s enlisted Bryan Fuller to produce a Friday the 13th prequel series called Crystal Lake.
The original Friday the 13th movie is about a mysterious killer who terrorizes counselors at Camp Crystal Lake, where years ago a boy named Jason Voorhees drowned. That first movie reveals the actual killer to be Jason’s mother, who never forgave the camp counselors for neglecting her son. But future movies brought in Jason himself, who by 2001’s Jason X was going into space. Franchises can get weird if they’re left alone for too long.
It sounds like Crystal Lake will bring things back down to earth. Perhaps it’ll be about the original Jason Voorhees drowning back in the ’50s?
Happy Halloween! A Friday the 13th prequel series is coming
Whatever tone the series takes, there’s some serious talent attached to it. Bryan Fuller created the cult series Hannibal as well as served as showrunner on the first season of American Gods. He doesn’t tend to make boring stuff.
What’s more, A24 is producing the series. They have a great track record with horror (and in general), producing films like The Witch, Hereditary and Midsommar. So this could be pretty interesting.
There’s no release date for Crystal Lake as of yet.
