The first season of House of the Dragon is in the bag! The Game of Thrones prequel show has been a success for HBO, and now the question is how they’re going to follow it up.
Well, with another season, of course! But when will that be along? Unfortunately, not for a while. While HBO renewed House of the Dragon almost immediately after it premiered in August, it didn’t lock it in for a second season ahead of time. And this show has a lot of moving parts; it’s going to take a minute for the production machine to rev to life again.
That said, things are in motion. Filming on House of the Dragon season 2 is scheduled to start up next year, and HBO executive Casey Bloys has at least given us a window. “Don’t expect [House of the Dragon season 2] in ’23, but I think sometime in ’24,” he recently said.
When will House of the Dragon season 2 come out on HBO?
Two years is a while to wait for more episodes starring Rhaenyra, Daemon, Alicent and the rest of the blonde-headed brigade, but that’s become the norm for big splashy special effects-driven dramas like this. House of the Dragon, The Witcher, The Wheel of Time, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power…two-year waits are where it’s at.
You know what could make this wait more bearable? If George R.R. Martin announced that he’d finished work on The Winds of Winter and that the new book would be coming out during the House of the Dragon gap year. I dream big dreams…
