House of the Dragon may be over, but HBO is readying another big splashy genre series to wow us in its place! Get ready for The Last of Us, an adaptation of Naughty Dog’s beloved video game series of the same name.

The Last of Us is about a zombie apocalypse…I know, original. This one stands out because of its focus on character. The story mainly follows two people: Joel (Pedro Pascal), a hardened survivor who’s had most of his hope crushed out of him by the brutal collapse of civilization; and Ellie (Bella Ramsey), a young girl who seems immune to the fungal virus that has turned so many other people into shambling monstrosities. Joel must escort Ellie across a ravaged United States to get her to people who could use her immunity to develop a cure. And maybe — just maybe — he’ll remember how to be human during the trip.

HBO spent a ton of time and money on this one. Take a look at the teaser below:

The Last of Us release date on HBO

According to Eurogamer, subscribers who load up the HBO Max homepage have been greeted with a release date for The Last of Us: January 15, or January 16 for subscribers in the UK. The public HBO website just lists the release date as “2023.”

So we’re not 100% sure that’s what’s going to happen, but it’s looking likely. And hey, that means that The Last of Us will air not long after The Walking Dead drops its final-ever episode. Missing zombies? Missing sci-fi shows? Not for long!

UPDATE: HBO confirmed that The Last of Us is indeed premiering on January 15. It also dropped this sweet poster:
