Aubrey Plaza, Heartstopper’s Joe Locke join WandaVision spinoff about Agatha Harkness
By Dan Selcke
WandaVision was the first Marvel TV show released on Disney+, and for my money it’s probably still the best. The story of how Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) trapped herself in some of sitcom purgatory with her dead husband and imaginary sons compelling people around the world. It even produced an Emmy-winning hit song!
Nosy neighbor/villainous witch Agatha Harkness proved so popular that Disney is giving her a spinoff, with Kathryn Hahn set to play her again. The show is called Agatha: Coven of Chaos, and the cast is coming together.
To start, Variety reports that The White Lotus star and deadpan savant Aubrey Plaza will join the show. She and Hahn also worked together on Parks and Recreation, where they both turned in hilarious performances. That’s one point to the casting department.
Will Joe Locke play the superhero Wiccan in Agatha: Coven of Chaos?
In addition, Variety also has it that Joe Locke will join the show. Locke recently gained fame after appearing in the Netflix drama Heartstopper as Charlie Spring, a gay teenager who falls for a popular classmate. The show was an immediate hit and has already been renewed for two more seasons.
We don’t know who Plaza or Locke are playing. That said, it’s easy to see Plaza as one of Agatha’s fellow witches, and the internet has some theories about Locke. Word is that he’ll play Wiccan, a magic-themed superhero and the son of Wanda and Vision.
Up above I said that Wanda’s sons were imaginary. They were, in a sense — Wanda used her reality-altering powers to bring them into existence — but this is magic we’re talking about; things get weird. In Marvel Comics, the soul of Wanda’s son is reincarnated into a boy named Billy Kaplan. And we saw in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness how Wanda’s kids could be alive and real in alternate dimensions. Just because Wanda’s kids faded away at the end of WandaVision doesn’t mean they can’t come back; Marvel has lots of avenues to explore.
There’s no release date for Agatha: Coven of Chaos as of yet, but expect to get more info as the cast snaps into place and filming gets underway.
