Doctor Who just bid farewell to Jodie Whittaker’s 13th Doctor, and now it’s time to look ahead to what the franchise has in store for the future. If you have not seen “The Power of the Doctor,” do not read ahead, as we will get into some major SPOILERS.
In 2023, we will be getting a series of exciting specials that include Heartstopper’s Yasmin Finney taking on the role of Rose Tyler. From what I understand, she is not replacing Billie Piper’s version of the character but taking on a new version instead.
In a world where travel across multiple galaxies and timelines is possible, I think it is feasible to comprehend another Rose Tyler out there somewhere. I’m excited for Finney to step into the world of Doctor Who, especially because she is the first transgender actress to play a lead role in the series.
Yasmin Finney explains why her Doctor Who casting will “change the world”
Finney is pretty pumped about getting to play the role of Rose Tyler and told Vogue that her casting will “change the world.” Sadly, that’s about all she can divulge for now.
“There are spies. If I talk about the Whoniverse, it’s over,” she said. “All I can say is, I feel so honoured to be seen by Russell … I remember growing up idolising it.”
Finney is also very proud to be a part of a “very inclusive” version of Doctor Who. “I’m happy to be the representation on a show that means a lot to so many,” she said.
Finney’s casting comes at a wild time for Doctor Who. We already knew Ncuti Gatwa was set to be the next Doctor. However, there was a major plot twist in Jodie Whittaker’s final episode. We saw her regenerate into David Tennant’s Doctor, who will now be the Fourteenth Doctor, who is different from the Tenth Doctor he was before. I know it’s confusing, but I am so happy Tennant is back, even if it is for three specials. Also returning is Catherine Tate, who originally played the companion to Tennant’s Doctor, Donna Noble.
So it would appear that Tennant will be the Fourteenth Doctor, and then Gatwa will take over right after him as the Fifteenth Doctor. Or at least that’s what I think! We’ll have to wait a year before we find out exactly how this will come together.
