While promoting his new book Cinema Speculation, famed filmmaker Quentin Tarantino gave his unfiltered thoughts on the exploding superhero genre. Speaking to the Los Angeles Times, Tarantino was asked why he has never taken on a Marvel or DC movie:

"You have to be a hired hand to do those things. I’m not a hired hand. I’m not looking for a job."

Tarantino’s distaste for the modern superhero money-making machine is well known, and the fact that he will not give in and direct one is kind of awesome. It was never Tarantino’s style to give creative control of his movies to anyone but himself. It shows in his films, which have somewhat become a genre of their own.

Tarantino also said that today’s filmmakers can’t wait for superhero movies to fall our of favor. And he thinks that will happen, using his deep knowledge of film history to remind us of how Hollywood used to make nothing but musicals only for the bottom to fall out from under the market in the 1960s. “The analogy works because it’s similar to a chokehold.”

Tarantino’s last film, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, was released in 2019, and he has not officially announced what his next project will be. He has said in the past that he only plans on making 10 movies, meaning his next one will be his last. Rumors have been swirling for years that his 10th movie will be Kill Bill Vol. 3. Tarantino has expressed interest in revisiting Uma Thurman’s character in a potential third movie, but we’ve heard nothing official yet.

Next. Warner Bros. Discovery to focus on Game of Thrones, Harry Potter and other franchises. dark
