Streaming Wars, Nov 2022: Netflix’s revenge
By Dan Selcke
Netflix’s subscriber comeback was probably the biggest story of the streaming wars this past month, but plenty of services are putting up good fights.
Each month, we read over the latest dispatches from the front lines of the Streaming Wars and assess how the likes of Netflix, HBO Max, Disney+ and the rest are doing. Who won the day, who was defeated, and who’s biding their time? We mark it all down on this living graph, which changes every month.
Paramount+
Paramount+ kept the firehose of Star Trek content coming in October, along with new episodes of Inside Amy Schumer, Beavis and Butthead, and new movies like Monster High: The Movie. Not the buzziest month on record, but not bad. Points: +2
Netflix
Netflix always has stuff coming in; October brought originals like Barbarians, The School for Good and Evil, The Midnight Club and The Great British Baking Show. Still, it was quiet by Netflix standards. The big news was that Netflix gained tons of subscribers when analysts had been predicting a loss. Netflix is still the king. Points: +3
Disney+
Disney+ leans on familiar franchises this month; on the Star Wars side of things, we got new episodes of Andor as well as Tales of the Jedi, whereas Marvel gave us She-Hulk and Werewolf by Night. All that and Dancing With The Stars. Points: +3
Hulu
A quiet month for Hulu. The biggest original was probably the new Hellraiser movie. Points: +1
HBO Max
Warner Bros. Discovery continues to pull back on HBO Max. It’s really lucky buzzy HBO shows continue to come out, including the conclusion of House of the Dragon season 1 as well as a new season of The White Lotus. Points: +2
Amazon Prime Video
This month, Amazon wrapped on The Rings of Power, premiered The Peripheral and dropped the new movie Catherine Called Birdy. Amazon continues to do…fine. Points: + 2
Apple TV+
The biggest thing to come to Apple TV+ in October was the second season of The Problem With John Stewart. Beyond that…is anyone watching (or even heard of) the crime drama Shantarum starring Charlie Hunnam? Points: + 1
Peacock
Easily the biggest Peacock release in October was the new movie Halloween Ends. We also got the new documentary I Love You, You Hate Me, about Barney the Dinosaur. There’s some other stuff in there too. All in all, better than usual for Peacock. Points: + 2
