Between this, The Last of Us show on HBO, the Horizon: Zero Dawn series at Netflix and the Fallout show at Amazon, video game adaptations are the hot thing.

Today, Netflix announced that it is bringing one of Xbox’s most successful video game franchises to life with a Gears of War live-acton film as well as an animated series. Netflix is partnering with the video game developer The Coalition on these projects.

Although five main games have been released in the Gears of War franchise since 2006, a film has never been able to get off the ground, although the movie rights were purchased by New Line Cinema — the producers behind Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings movies — way back in 2007. Since then, periodic updates have surfaced about script rewrites and production holdups. With Netflix’s deep pool of cash and extensive resources, hopefully the franchise will finally get the faithful film adaptation that it deserves.

The Gears of War games are set on a fictional planet called Sera where humanity is engaged in an existential war against a race of mutant monsters called the Locust Horde. Marcus Fenix, the main protagonist, is a soldier who fights the Locust with his team, called Delta-One. Although the gameplay is mainly focused around Marcus and his buddies slicing Locust with chainsaws, there are fascinating sci-fi elements and historical parallels that make it more than just a shooting game. The movie and TV series may explore those elements.
