The fifth and final season of Stranger Things is on the way! We probably won’t see new episodes for quite a while yet, but Netflix is already getting the hype train rolling by revealing the title of the season premiere. Behold:

Yep, the title is “The Crawl.” What does that mean? I ‘unno.

What does “The Crawl” mean for Stranger Things season 5?

Obviously, “The Crawl” could mean just about anything, although there are some theories already flying. Given how often the show’s titles dovetail with stuff from Dungeons & Dragons, some fans are speculating that “The Crawl” refers to a “dungeon crawl,” which is an adventure where D&D characters slink around a dungeon solving puzzles and fighting baddies. Although given that season 4 ended with the Upside Down forcing itself into the waking world of Hawkins, Indiana, somehow I doubt the kids are going to have much time for D&D.

Other fans have pointed towards some lyrics in the Metallica song “Master of Puppets,” which the dearly departed Eddie Munson played in the season 4 finale. “Come crawling faster/come obey your master,” the song goes. Perhaps the title is a reference to Eddie? Might he become a puppet for the wicked Vecna, who is still out there causing trouble?

And of course, “The Crawl” could just refer to some new gross creepy-crawly thing the kids have to fight. Wouldn’t be the first time.

There’s no release date set for Stranger Things season 5 as of yet, although considering that season 4 aired this year and this show likes to take its sweet time, I wouldn’t bet on seeing any new episodes before 2024.
