Neil Gaiman is “looking forward to” casting Delirium in The Sandman
By Ashley Hurst
In The Sandman season 1, we were introduced to four of the seven Endless siblings; Dream, Death, Desire and Despair. With more episodes officially on the way, we will meet more of the Endless. Specifically, we’ll meet Destiny and fan-favorite Delirium, whom author Neil Gaiman is super excited to cast.
Formerly known as Delight, Delirium is the youngest of the Endless. Her temperament fluctuates throughout the saga; sometimes she’s sweet and silly and occasionally a voice of sanity, and at other times unstable and unpredictable. Her appearance changes too. She’s best know for being infantile, with different colored eyes and unkempt hair.
Fans have already dreamcast actors they’d like to see as Delirium; Stranger Things star Sadie Sink, for instance.
Who should play Destiny in The Sandman season 2?
And then there’s Destiny, the oldest of the Endless and the most mysterious; he says little, wears a hood and cloak, and is concerned with order and fate. Fans have put forward former Doctor Who Peter Capaldi as as possible casting choice, which I am fully behind.
Meanwhile, super fans are already putting their own names into the hat. I mean, Mason Alexander Park got to play Desire by tweeting Neil Gaiman, so that’s not a bad plan. If anyone out there wants to audition, Gaiman has revealed some strict guidelines. “As a reminder to everyone out there who wants to act, ‘I’m a lot like Delirium in real life’ is not the hard-sell casting slam dunk many of you seem to think it is,” he wrote on his Tumblr.
"If you’re going to be in Sandman you need to be an actor, you need to have credits, we need to know not only that you’re brilliant but that you’re also reliable, and that you know how to act for TV — can you do the same scene two dozen times, and still say the lines every time as if this is the first time you’ve ever said them? Can you be funny and break people’s hearts at the same time?"
For those interested, Lucinda Syson is the casting director for The Sandman.
Will Destruction appear in The Sandman season 2?
As it happens, there is also a seventh Endless sibling, Destruction, but that’s a story for another time. He (probably) won’t appear in the new episodes. He makes his first appearance in a later volume of the comics, “Brief Lives.”
Naturally, fans have already cited Game of Thrones veteran Kristofer Hivju (Tormund Giantsbane) as a potential casting choice since he bears a striking resemblance to the character in the comics.
The new episodes of The Sandman do not have a release date just yet, but with any luck, we should expect them sometime in early 2024.
