The Game of Thrones nerds on SNL write House of the Dragon sketch

Back in the day, a lot of people made parodies of Game of Thrones, including the folks over at Saturday Night Live. That tradition continues with the prequel series House of the Dragon.

This past weekend, Dave Chappelle hosted SNL. Naturally, the writers thought that was the best time for their House of the Dragon sendup. Watch below!

Full disclosure: I never really watched Chappelle’s Show, although his characters were so famous even I recognize a few of the ones who show up towards the end of this sketch. Tyrone Biggums, Rick James…is this sketch a sendup of House of the Dragon or a Chappelle’s Show nostalgia fest? Why not both?

Saturday Night Live gets the details right for its House of the Dragon parody

That said, I think I was most impressed by how many detail the sketch got right. You can tell the SNL writers actually watch the show. Sure, they may mock the hard-to-remember names (“Our names are insane, and sound identical”) but they get every one of them right, from Rhaenyra to Daemon to Baela to Rhaena to Corlys Velaryon. They mention Flea Bottom. Viserys Targaryen walks out at one point looking decrepit and falling apart. There’re some nerds on that writing staff!

Also, the Dragonstone set looks pretty nice, to say nothing of the special effects for all those dragons. And I liked the joke about the family tree being the same as the chart of who’s having sex with each other.

For comparison’s sake, I present you with the old SNL sketch about Jon Snow’s resurrection:

Compare and contrast.
