Andor may not move as quickly as Star Wars fans are used to, but the Disney+ spinoff is absolutely killing it. Andor is going deeper and saying more than I thought any Star Wars show was capable of, and it’s just getting better as its first season goes on.

The latest episode, “One Way Out,” featured a daring prison escape mounted by lead character Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) and Kino Loy (Andy Serkis), a disgruntled prisoner who clings to the idea that he’ll go free as long as he behaves like a model inmate…until it becomes clear that the Empire has no intention of doing right by the many people it’s unfairly imprisoned. In the thrilling climax, all the prisoners rush to freedom only to find that the prison is located high above the ocean. Most jump down and make a swim for it, but Kino Loy can’t. Heartbreakingly, he can’t swim, so the guy who made this prison break happen has to stay behind.

Kino made a huge impression in a short amount of time. Is this the last we see of him? “I think it’s open there with what happens to his storyline,” director Toby Haynes said on Entertainment Weekly’s Degobah Dispitch podcast. “He certainly wasn’t killed. So we know that much. And then that’s the interesting thing about [creator Tony Gilroy’s] writing. If you’re not dead, then who knows what’s gonna happen to your character? So [his return] could happen.”

Will we see Andy Serkis’ character Kino Loy again on Star Wars: Andor?

Andor seems committed to telling a grounded, realistic story, so I wouldn’t be shocked if we never see Kino again, except in Cassian’s actions. But you never know…

As for the moment itself, Haynes said that Serkis tried playing the scene a few different ways. “The way that Andy played it, we were doing it where he’s sort of angry and it’s emotional that he’s saying: ‘I can’t swim! I can’t swim!'”

"But then he just suddenly played it in this serene way where he was smiling and he goes: ‘I’ve done all this and I can’t actually get out, I can’t swim. This is where we say goodbye.’ I thought that was absolutely inspired and [it] was great working with Andy…it was sort of thrilling."

Whether or not Kino Loy returns, Star Wars: Andor has proven itself well worth a watch. New episodes drop on Disney+ on Wednesdays.
