Zack Snyder teases his Star Wars-esque sci-fi movie Rebel Moon
During a recent appearance on the Preston and Steve Show (Snyder appears at the 2 hour and 47 minute mark), director Zack Snyder discussed some details about his upcoming Netflix film Rebel Moon, which he describes as a “giant sci-fi epic.”
“It’s a space fantasy, so there’s no Earth, necessarily,” Snyder said. “There’s a community on a planet, a farming planet, and there’s a bunch of bad guys. The mother world’s armies are in the area, and they need to be fed. So they come to the village and ask for the village to feed them, basically, while they’re doing their war in that area of the galaxy. And of course, they are not kind about asking – and the result will probably be the obliteration of the village. The villagers decide to fight, and so they have to go out into the galaxy and collect some soldiers, warriors to help them.”
Snyder said that filming has gone on throughout 2022 and is nearing the end of principal photography. As for inspiration for the film, Snyder said that as a Star Wars fan, he was not only eager to make a sci-film with Endor-esque action sequences, but also to build a universe that is a new IP with its own mythology.

The main character in the film is played by Sofia Boutella (Star Trek Beyond); she’s a young member of the village seeking out allies who can fight against “tyrannical armies.”
"She is just unbelievable not only as an actress, but she’s super athletic and has been able to do these amazing stunts. So it’s really cool to see them fighting – it’s them. That’s really a treat for me to have athletic actors to just do whatever I ask, which is taxing on them but they do an amazing job."
Other cast members include Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy), Jena Malone (The Hunger Games), Cary Elwes (Glory), Ed Skrein (Deadpool), Michiel Huisman (Game of Thrones), Djimon Hounsou (Guardians of the Galaxy), Corey Stoll (Ant-Man), Ray Fisher (Justice League) and the great Anthony Hopkins.
Snyder co-wrote Rebel Moon with Kurt Johnstad (300) and Shay Hatten (Army of the Dead), and is co-producing with his wife Deborah. Given the plot details Snyder revealed and the cast of action movie vets, it seems like Rebel Moon will have a Magnificent 7 type of plot where a group of badass warriors get together and fight against a much more powerful enemy.
As for the release, Snyder said that it is unclear at this point whether Rebel Moon will only be available to stream on Netflix or if it will be released in theaters as well. Snyder was also hesitant to commit to an exact release date but implied that filming is almost complete and that post-production will begin soon.
