House of the Dragon DVD may include deleted scenes after all!

House of the Dragon season 1 had quite a lot of scenes that were left on the cutting room floor. The first season of HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel series told the story of a family falling apart at the seams over the course of nearly three decades. Considering the numerous time jumps, it should come as no surprise that there was a lot of material that didn’t make it into the final show.

What was surprising, however, was that the physical release for House of the Dragon season 1 didn’t include any of those deleted scenes in its list of bonus features. Would we never see Rhaenyra Targaryen help her best friend Alicent Hightower get ready to marry her father King Viserys? Or Ser Criston Cole being sworn into the Kingsguard?

For a time, it seemed those deleted scenes would be lost to us forever. But lo! There may be some good news on that front.

House of the Dragon DVD release may include deleted scenes after all

The latest episode of HBO’s official House of the Dragon podcast, “The Sounds of Westeros,” featured a deep dive interview with composer Ramin Djawadi. And while that’s incredibly cool, one of the most exciting bits came right at the end, when podcast host Jason Concepcion revealed that the House of the Dragon season 1 physical release would have the deleted scenes from the show’s first season.

The physical release will contain over an hour of bonus features, including two never-before-seen featurettes. Concepcion didn’t go into detail about which featurette could contain the deleted scenes, saying only that “that’s where you’re going to be able to find [the deleted scenes], House of the Dragon: The Complete First Season.”

So it’s looking like we’ll get to see some of those deleted scenes after all, but they may be part of a broader featurette rather than listed separately. Here’s hoping HBO gives us an official confirmation at some point so we know exactly where to find the deleted scenes ahead of the release.

House of the Dragon: The Complete First Season is currently available for preorder. It will release through your retailer of choice on December 20.
