Warner Bros. really wants to make a Harry Potter TV show
With the Fantastic Beasts movies kinda-sorta flaming out, Warner Bros. is looking for new stories set in Harry Potter’s Wizarding World.
The final proper Harry Potter movie, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, came out in 2011, but the series has never really gone away. There was the followup play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, the Fantastic Beasts prequel trilogy, and a reunion special entitled Return to Hogwarts that ran on HBO Max.
And maybe, sooner or later, there’ll be a Harry Potter TV show. Speaking to Variety, Warner Bros. executive Channing Dungey said that there is a lot desire within the studio to develop a Harry Potter TV series. “There is a tremendous amount of ambition for that and we are engaged in a number of different conversations. I wish I could tell you that something was on imminent on the horizon but there is a lot of interest and a lot of passion for it, so absolutely.”
"What’s great is you see how the audience is so engaged and so ready. Our unscripted team did a fantastic Return to Hogwarts special for HBO last year, that resonated so tremendously, then we did a quiz show, The Tournament of Houses, that Helen Mirren was the host for. The audience is ready, they want to go, so we’ve just got to figure out what the right next step is."
It is unclear if a new TV show would be another adaptation of the original Harry Potter books but with a new cast, or if it would focus on a different set of characters. For instance, there have many calls over the years for a series about the Marauders, the name given to Harry’s father and his group of friends back when they were at Hogwarts.
Whatever the studio decides to develop, there is hunger for new Harry Potter content. With the Fantastic Beasts series (probably) over, we’ll likely hear something before too long.
