The first season of HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel show House of the Dragon wrapped up back in October, and it went a long ways toward getting people interested in Westeros again. A bunch of silver-haired rich people climbing on dragonback and trying to kill each other. What’s not to love?
HBO renewed the show for a second season pretty much right after the first premiered. However, it’ll be a while before we see it. Filming on House of the Dragon season 2 isn’t set to go begin until early in 2023. They’ll probably be at it for a while, and then there’s the lengthy post-production process. All told, we very likely won’t be seeing new finished episodes until 2024. And it goes without saying that we won’t get to watch House of the Dragon season 2 this month.
Back during the early seasons of Game of Thrones, seasons would come out a year apart. But in those days, the show was far less complex to make than House of the Dragon, which from a technical perspective is more on par with what Game of Thrones was like towards the end of its end. Quality takes time.
House of the Dragon season 2 probably won’t come out next year
And House of the Dragon season 2 will kick things up a notch, which could add to its time in the post-production hopper. The first season, lush and complex as it was, had a lot of episodes that was just people in rooms talking. Now that war has begun in earnest, the war will ramp up in season 2. That means more dragon battles, and possibly some normal battles between soldiers on the ground as well.
All that means that the wait will be long. If only George R.R. Martin could release The Winds of Winter in the meantime; that would definitely tide people over.
