3 times Game of Thrones spoiled the events of House of the Dragon
Joffrey Baratheon spoils what happens to Rhaenyra Targaryen
As if we needed any more reasons to dislike Joffrey Baratheon, he absolutely spoiled what will happen at the end of House of the Dragon. In the third season, Joffrey takes his fiancée Margeary Tyrell for a tour of the Great Sept of Baelor. He proceeds to tell her that Rhaenyra’s brother fed her to his dragon while her son watched.
There’s more to it, but that’s essentially what happens. If you’re wondering which son watches his mother die, it’s young Aegon, Rhaenyra’s firstborn son with Daemon Targaryen. But we have a long way to go before this happens. I’m sure the writers on House of the Dragon will find ways to make Rhaenyra’s death surprising.
Winter is Coming
George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire books spill a good deal of ink talking about the Prince That Was Promised, a prophecy about a hero will come and save the world from a great darkness. Is it Jon Snow? Is it Daenerys Targaryen? It remains a mystery, at least for now.
Game of Thrones doesn’t focus as much on it, although it does come up. Interestingly, we hear much more about this prophecy on House of the Dragon, where King Viserys I Targaryen tells his daughter Rhaenyra about a messiah who will defend the world from a monstrous force that will descend out of the far North beyond the Wall, a messiah who can only do their work if a Targaryen rules the Seven Kingdoms. Viserys says this prophecy is passed down to every successor to the Iron Throne, but clearly there’s a miscommunication sometime between House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones, because Robert Baratheon is clueless about it at the start of the show.
Still, versions of the prophecy become known. For instance, Melisandre believes that Jon Snow is this messianic figure after she brings him back from the dead. This isn’t so much a reference Game of Thrones makes to the events of House of the Dragon, but more an interesting bit of connective tissue that binds them together.
And those are some of times the events of House of the Dragon were referenced on Game of Thrones. Were there ones we missed? In any case, I find it funny that fans can rewatch the original show and get a preview of some of the things to come on the prequel.
