Amazon’s new science fiction show The Peripheral, based on the novel of the same name by William Gibson, just wrapped on its first season, and the creative team is is already looking towards the future. Season 1 ended with an enormous cliffhanger as Flynne Fisher (Chloë Grace Moretz) pulled off a plan that created a new timeline for her and her friends, sacrificing her life in her old timeline in order to make it work. It was a shocking turn that deftly sets the stage for a follow-up.
Lisa Joy, co-creator of HBO’s Westworld, serves as an executive producer on The Peripheral. She recently opened up to the Radio Times about her hopes for continuing the new sci-fi series.
“I would love to have season 2 and season 3 and all the seasons in the world to explore this amazing, amazing novel,” Joy said. “I know we’ve already started brainstorming about season two in the hopes that we get a season two, and the world only gets more vast and complicated. But the thing that really appeals to me about it is how much deeper we are able to dive into each of the characters’ lives, and personal lives and ambitions and motivations. To me, that is where it gets really exciting.”
Will The Peripheral get a season 2 on Amazon Prime Video?
A lot of fans are probably wondering right now whether The Peripheral will be renewed. The show cost Amazon a reported $80 million to make, and while it has gained a solid audience, it wasn’t a huge breakout hit. As of this writing we only have Nielsen ratings for the first two weeks of The Peripheral’s run, and during that time it did not break into the list of top ten most streamed series.
The fate of The Peripheral and Flynne Fisher will likely become clearer in coming weeks. And hey, there’s always the novel (and its sequel, Agency) to read in the meantime!
