Avatar: The Way of Water is the second movie in the Avatar franchise…although calling it a franchise is a bit odd given that there’s only been one Avatar thing ever so far.

But rest assured that Disney (and 20th Century Fox before it) are looking to change that. Not only are we getting a second Avatar movie, but there are plans for a third, fourth and fifth after that. And director James Cameron is even contemplating a sixth and seventh! We could be drowning in blue people for decades.

But it all comes back to the first movie, which came out on December 10, 2009 in the U.K. and December 18 of the same year in the United States. It’s since gone on to become the highest grossing movie in the history of cinema.

When does Avatar 2 come out in theaters?

Avatar: The Way of Water is just around the corner. Like its predecessor, it’s a December baby. The second Avatar movie will premiere in theaters on December 16.

Will Avatar: The Way of Water live up to the daunting expectations set by the first film? We’ll know very soon! If you’ve been waiting these past 13 years for a follow-up to the first Avatar, this will ve a merry Christmas.
