Doctor Who fans have had quite the year, to say the least. We said farewell to Jodie Whittaker, welcomed back David Tennant as the Fourteenth Doctor for the 60th-anniversary special, and are now getting ready for a new chapter of the franchise.
Ncuti Gatwa will take over as the next Doctor (I guess the Fifteenth?) and is currently filming alongside Millie Gibson, who will play companion Ruby Sunday. The official Twitter account posted a behind-the-scenes picture to celebrate the start of shooting.
In addition to all that, Russell T Davies is returning as the showrunner on Doctor Who after years away from the series. It’s just an exciting time to be a Whovian!
But wait, there’s more!
The Doctor Who Christmas special will return
While speaking to Doctor Who Magazine, Davies revealed that he has been working on Christmas specials for the show! “For the first time ever, I’m writing a Christmas Special… at Christmas!” he said.
He went on to say that there would be two specials, one in 2023 which he has written already, and another in 2024. “The 2023 script has been long since signed-off. The new one is for end-of-year 2024!” I’m going to assume he’s referring to the 60th anniversary special for 2023, and then the new Christmas one for 2024.
Sadly, we are still a solid year away from seeing a new episode of Doctor Who. It is going to be a very long wait, especially after that finale. I want to see David Tennant back in action!
Doctor Who season 14 will have fewer episodes than normal
And when the show does return, we will get eight new episodes of it. Although that’s less than what we’re used to (excepting the most recent, pandemic-era season, the last few seasons have averaged 10 episodes), Davies reassures fans that he’ll make up for it. “OK, that’s fewer episodes than the last full season. But give us time. We have plans, and that’s a promise!” he said.
We’ve trusted this man before, so I say we can trust him again. With Doctor Who under his guidance, I think we are in for a wild ride, Whovians!
