After the teaser trailer for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny dropped last week, director James Mangold fired off some interesting tweets expressing his displeasure at “internet trolls” spreading false ideas about Harrison Ford potentially being replaced after the upcoming fifth Indiana Jones movie.
"One more time. No one is “taking over” or replacing Indy or donning his hat nor is he being “erased” thru some contrivance— and he never was, not not in any cut or script — but trolls will troll — that’s how they get their clicks."
Ford himself has said in the past that nobody will ever replace Harrison Ford as the fedora-wearing adventurer, and that the character will die with him. Whether or not that will ultimately be the case, Mangold sure seems to feel strongly about the issue.
"And please don’t exhaust me pointing out how once in a while a troll is “right”. Even a blind squirrel finds a nut now & then. All one has to do is look at set photos & interviews & u get enough info to make wild guesses about a movie plot. The diff between trolling a-holes & everyone else is they r trying to make $ off your feelings about other films & culture war politics. They push contoversial guesses as coming from “sources” to gin up clicks. Let it go."
Rumors about Pheobe Waller-Bridge potentially taking over for Ford have been swirling for months. She is playing Indiana’s goddaughter Helena in the film. Mangold, who previously directed blockbusters such as Logan and Ford v. Ferrari.
Indiana Jones 5 director hits back at “trolling a-holes”
Even though Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny takes place in the late1960s, Indiana will again be fighting Nazis. The new movie is set against the backdrop of the Cold War-era space race between the United States and the USSR. In real life, the U.S. recruited many ex-Nazi scientists into NASA.
This will apparently be Ford’s final time playing Indiana Jones. The filmmakers are no doubt hoping that The Dial of Destiny is received better than the fourth film The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which many fans derided as a debacle.
In addition to Ford, The Dial of Destiny will star Antonio Banderas, Mads Mikkelsen, Toby Jones and John Rhys-Davies, who will be reprising his role as Sallah from the previous films.
