The DC Extended Universe of films has been tumultuous at the best of times. Things got off to a more-or-less decent start with Man of Steel way back in 2013, but took a turn for the meh with Batman v Superman and then Justice League. Despite some bright spots along the way, things have never been fully on track since.

One of those bright spots was the 2017 Wonder Woman movie directed by Patty Jenkins starring Gal Gadot. But even that got messy, as the follow-up Wonder Woman 1984 failed to impress.

Recently, James Gunn and Peter Safran were installed as the new heads of DC Studios, and given a mission to turn this boat around and sail it to smooth, profitable waters. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the two have been in heavy planning mode lately, and will be presenting their vision for a kind of interconnected DC universe to newly installed Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav next week. And their plans may not please everyone…

Don’t believe everything the Rock tells you: Henry Cavill may not return as Superman after all

The big news is that Gunn and Safran have reportedly told Jenkins that her pitch for Wonder Woman 3 “did not fit in with the new (but still unfolding) plans.” Does this mean that we’ve seen the last of Gadot as Wonder Woman? It’s possible, but we’re not 100% sure yet. Oddly enough, Gadot tweeted a message to fans the other day where she talked about sharing “the next chapter” of Wonder Woman’s story with them. It’s unclear if she knew of this news at the time.

But Gunn and Safran’s plans may be more disruptive yet. Per THR, they want to clear the decks of all the actors that Zack Snyder hired to play the first generation of DCEU superheroes. That would include Henry Cavill as Superman, who recently returned for a cameo in Black Adam. Dwayne Johnson, the star of that movie, has been hyping Cavill’s return up something fierce, and Cavill himself sounds like he’s ready to put back on the blue tights.

But it’s one thing for actors to say something and another for producers to agree. Per THR, the new management isn’t happy about Johnson talking up his own involvement with the DCEU and beating the drum about Cavill. Maybe Johnson’s words would have more weight if Black Adam had been a huge success, but at this point it’s not even clear if the movie will turn a profit.

Jason Momoa will have a place in the new DCEU (probably as Lobo)

So what are Gunn and Safran planning for the future? We’ll probably know more details before too long. One interesting bit is that while, under the new plan, Jason Momoa would no longer play Aquaman after next year’s Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, Gunn and co still want him around. THR notes that there’s been a push for him to play Lobo, an antihero who fits with Gunn’s preoccupation with misfit outsiders. Momoa himself has hinted that he’s “very excited” about a new DC project, and this may well be it.

DC movies like The FlashBlue Beetle and Shazam! Fury of the Gods are still on the docket, but they may be the last films we see from the old regime before Gunn and Safran start pivoting in a new direction. If there’s one consistent thing about DC movies, it’s that they’re always changing. Stay tuned.
