A couple of days ago, The Hollywood Reporter dropped a bombshell about a slew of changes coming at DC Studios, which is now being managed by Peter Safran and Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn: Wonder Woman 3 is reportedly dead in the water, Black Adam probably isn’t getting a sequel, Henry Cavill may not be coming back as Superman, and Jason Mamoa might be getting cast as the intergalactic antihero Lobo (which means he’s no longer playing Aquaman).
Is it true? Is it all bad information? Gunn himself has now taken to Twitter to reassure fans that all is not as chaotic as it may seem.
Is Wonder Woman 3 really cancelled? Is Henry Cavill returning as Superman or what? What of Lobo?
“So. As for the story yesterday in The Hollywood Reporter, some of it is true, some of it is half-true, some of it is not true, & some of it we haven’t decided yet whether it’s true or not,” Gunn wrote, doing an admirable imitation of Bilbo Baggins’ birthday speech from The Fellowship of the Ring. He continues:
"Although this first month at DC has been fruitful, building the next ten years of story takes time & we’re still just beginning.Peter & I chose to helm DC Studios knowing we were coming into a fractious environment, both in the stories being told & in the audience itself & there would be an unavoidable transitional period as we moved into telling a cohesive story across film, TV, animation, and gaming. But, in the end, the drawbacks of that transitional period were dwarfed by the creative possibilities & the opportunity to build upon what has worked in DC so far & to help rectify what has not.We know we are not going to make every single person happy every step of the way, but we can promise everything we do is done in the service of the STORY & in the service of the DC CHARACTERS we know you cherish and we have cherished our whole lives. As for more answers about the future of the DCU, I will sadly have to ask you to wait. We are giving these characters & the stories the time & attention they deserve & we ourselves still have a lot more questions to ask & answer."
Beneath the brain-aching amount of “&” symbols necessitated by Twitter character limits, there’s some intriguing stuff to unpack here. It doesn’t come as a huge surprise that Gunn claims some of the things in that Hollywood Reporter piece either weren’t accurate, weren’t settled, or were only half-true. Though it was built on insider info, THR’s report also contained a fair amount of speculation about the future of DC.
So what’s true, what’s false, and what’s more complicated? Of everything in that bombshell news piece, my best guess is that the cancellation of Wonder Woman 3 is legit.
As for everything else, we’ll know more when James Gunn tells us more.
