Avatar: The Way of Water is the first movie director James Cameron has made in 13 years, ever  since the first Avatar, and he has spent a lot of that time developing the world of this story in his head. Not only has Cameron outlined multiple sequels to his 2009 mega-blockbuster, he wrote an entire script to fill in the 10-year time jump between the first and second film.

Star Sam Worthington, who plays lead character Jake Sully, told Collider about Cameron’s “1.5” script. “Jim gave us a script of 1.5 that he wrote that shows the time between Avatar and Avatar: The Way of Water, and he wrote a full script. He said, ‘Look, read this. We’ll fill in the blanks of what Jake’s been doing.’ I said, ‘When do we shoot this one? Because this is amazing.’ He goes, ‘No, no, that’s just something I wrote over the past year to give you his backstory.'”

Obviously, Cameron plans for every contingency. According to Worthington, most of the third Avatar movie has already been filmed, and there are plans for more beyond that. There’s no telling how big Cameron’s Avatar universe could get.

Avatar: the Way of Water will hit theaters on December 16. Its predecessor became the highest grossing movie of all time with $2.8 billion earned at the box office worldwide, so it has big shoes to fill.
