James Gunn has been all over the news (and Twitter) lately after it was announced that he would be the new co-CEO of DC Studios, alongside Peter Safran. Which movies will move forward? Which movies are getting axed? And most importantly, what characters may get their second (or third) chances to return? Gunn and Safran are now in charge of all of it

Of course, the hottest topic recently has been whether Henry Cavill will reprise his role as Superman for the DCEU. He showed up at the end of Black Adam and seems to think he has a future as the Man of Steel. All of this happened right around the time it was announced that he was leaving the role of Geralt of Rivia on Netflix’s The Witcher. Was that done to free up his time so he could play Superman again?

But lately there are have been doubts on that score. James Gunn isn’t saying anything concrete, but he did weigh in on Twitter. What’s happening with Superman on the big screen? Here’s what he was willing he say:

James Gunn addresses Superman’s future in the DCEU

Earlier this week, Gunn tweeted in tribute to the 44th-anniversary of the 1978 Superman movie starring Christopher Reeve. This sparked a flurry of fans questions asking if Gunn was implying something. “I’m trying to say it’s the 44th anniversary of the premiere of Superman which is a great movie,” he replied. Fair enough.

That led to the most important question: Is Superman coming back to the big screen? “Yes of course,” Gunn wrote. “Superman is a huge priority, if not the biggest priority.”

Okay, that is exciting, but is it Henry Cavill’s Superman? One fan tweeted that Gunn did not like Cavill. The Guardians of the Galaxy director made his feelings about that one clear: “False.” That’s about all he had to say on the Cavill front.

“Although this first month at DC has been fruitful, building the next ten years of the story takes time & we’re still just beginning,” Gunn said recently. While he may not be giving us specifics, I trust Gunn will lead the franchise in the right direction. If the guy can make The Suicide Squad an entertaining watch, he’s got this DCEU revamp on lock.
