Netflix producing live-action version of the anime My Hero Academia
By Dan Selcke
I don’t know which executive at Netflix loves live-action versions of Japanese anime, but they have a lot of pull. In the past several years, we’ve seen live-actions versions of Death Note and Cowboy Bebop on the series, and there’s currently a live-action version of One Piece in the works. Now, The Hollywood Reporter has it that the streamer is giving My Hero Academia the live-action treatment.
My Hero Academia began as a manga in 2014. It’s about a boy named Izuku Midoriya, who lives in a world where most people have superpowers, or “quirks.” He was born without one, but still dreams of being a superhero. He’s recruited by the hero All Might and ends up going to an exclusive high school for superheroes in training. Harry Potter meets the Marvel Cinematic Universe, what’s not to like?
Anyway, the manga quickly became popular and got turned into an anime series. Now, Legendary is turning it into a live-action movie, with Netflix naturally jumping on the opportunity to distribute it. Joby Harold will pen the screenplay. Shinsuke Sato, who’s worked in anime for years, will direct.
A live-action version of My Hero Academia is coming to Netflix
Up to this point, most of Netflix’s live-action anime remakes haven’t fared particularly well; the Death Note movie was widely panned and Netflix cancelled Cowboy Bebop after one season. But I guess they figure they’re gonna strike gold sooner or later.
There’s no release date for the My Hero Academia movie as of yet.
