Netflix and chill? More like Netflix and panic over whether your favorite show will return for another season. The streamer has a rocky history with renewals; even super-popular shows can find themselves in precarious positions. The latest show to be struck by the cancellation curse is Warrior Nun.

Based on the comic book by Ben Dunn, Warrior Nun follows Ava Silva (Alba Baptista), a girl who wakes up in a morgue to find that she has powers and is thrown into battle against demons and other powerful forces, all of them fighting for a precious artifact that she possesses.

While Warrior Nun wasn’t as popular as the likes of Stranger Things or Wednesday, it should’ve merited another season. The second season, which premiered on November 10, spent an impressive three weeks in Netflix’s list of top 10 most watched shows. The viewing figures for season 2 were a little disappointing, having peaked at 27.74 million hours viewed. That figure is lower than First Kill, which was cancelled a few months back. The bar for renewal at Netflix is set astronomically high.

Numbers aside, season 2 had fantastic reviews. Look no further than the Rotten Tomatoes, where it stands at 100% for Critic Ratings and 99% for Audience Score.

On Twitter, creator and showrunner Simon Barry addressed the surprise news, confirming that the show will not return. “It was a privilege to be part of this,” he wrote. It sounds pretty final, although there’s always the possibility that the show could be picked up elsewhere.

Fans are fuming over the cancellation of Warrior Nun

Understandably, fans are absolutely heartbroken by the sudden cancellation. Fans had hoped that the overwhelmingly positive reviews for season 2 would be enough to get the show over the line, despite the lackluster numbers. Let’s take a look at some reactions from Twitter:

Naturally, fans have set up a petition to save the show, if only to make the people at Netflix feel bad.

Seasons 1 and 2 of Warrior Nun are now streaming on Netflix. We can only imagine what season 3 would’ve looked like…
