Unlike Marvel movies, Avatar 2 doesn’t have a post-credits scene

Avatar 2, aka Avatar: The Way of Water, is out now in theaters! Does it live up to the impressive reputation of its predecessor? Only you can decide…but we think it mostly gets there.
Living up to the first Avatar movie is only one of the media narratives that has emerged during the lead-up to this 13-years-in-the-making sequel. Another narrative, and one that was much less expected, was director James Cameron s*itting on superhero movies. For instance, here’s what he said about character arcs in superhero films:
"When I look at these big, spectacular films – I’m looking at you, Marvel and DC – it doesn’t matter how old the characters are, they all act like they’re in college. They have relationships, but they really don’t. They never hang up their spurs because of their kids. The things that really ground us and give us power, love, and a purpose? Those characters don’t experience it, and I think that’s not the way to make movies."
And here’s him crapping on the special effects in the Avengers movies:
"WETA Effects, as it’s now known, is the best. Right? Industrial Light & Magic does great work, but when it comes to the kind of emotive facial stuff that we’re doing? Thanos? Come on. Give me a break. You saw [Avatar: The Way of Water]. It’s not even close."
It has been very fun to hear Cameron go on these tears; he should give interviews more often.
Unlike the Marvel movies James Cameron derides, Avatar: The Way of Water doesn’t have a post-credits scene
Another Marvel tradition is the post-credits scene. Pretty much every Marvel movie has one, and sometimes more than one. And a lot of other big-budget blockbusters have followed suit. It’s kind of become de rigueur in the film industry, all thanks to Iron Man and his ilk.
But Cameron is having none of that. In a refreshing change of pace, Avatar: The Way of Water doesn’t have a post-credits scene. What you see is what you get. Instead of waiting to see what’s on tap for Avatar 3, you can get up and beat the line to the bathroom like a dignified human being.
I don’t actually think this is Cameron taking another shot at Marvel movies, but it is nice to see someone bucking the trend. Avatar: The Way of Water is in theaters now.
