The episode count for the fourth and final season of Netflix’s offbeat superhero show The Umbrella Academy has been revealed, and it’s made some fans a little disheartened.

The Umbrella Academy showrunner Steve Blackman took to Twitter to drop the news that the show’s fourth and final season will only be comprised of six episodes. Seasons 1-3 of The Umbrella Academy were 10 episodes a piece, making the final season the shortest by a wide margin.

“It’s true. But you’re going to love them,” Blackman told one fan who was concerned about the smaller episode count.

The Umbrella Academy’s final season will have fewer episodes than usual

It’s worth noting that as of right now we don’t how long the new episodes will run. In response to Blackman’s announcement, some fans began speculating that the episodes we do get will be much longer. After all, the fourth season of Stranger Things had episode that ran from 70 minutes to a jaw-dropping two-and-a-half hours, so clearly Netflix is willing to experiment.

The Umbrella Academy has never had the same level of success as Stranger Things, so it’s hard to bank on Netflix pulling out all the stops for season 4. But if the episodes averaged over an hour, it could go a ways toward making it feel like a more substantial last season.

It’ll be a while before we discover how it all turns out. Season 3 of The Umbrella Academy saw the dysfunctional Hargreeves family facing off against an alternate-universe version of their team, the so-called Sparrow Academy, while trying to stop a time paradox they inadvertently caused from tearing apart the fabric of reality. That season ended with a cliffhanger that saw the Hargreeves siblings going their own ways, but it’s only a matter of time til the band’s back together.

The Umbrella Academy season 4 is set to begin filming in early 2023, so we’re expecting to see it hit Netflix sometime in 2024.
