Doctor Who is in one of its semi-regular periods of flux, although this one has been a bit wilder than usual. Jodie Whittaker is out as the Thirteenth Doctor, with Ncuti Gatwa set to replace her…with a twist. When Whittaker left in the most recent episode of Doctor Who, she regenerated not into Gatwa, but into…David Tennant, who played the Tenth Doctor years ago.

So what’s happening is that David Tennant will play the Fourteenth Doctor for a few specials, before regenerating again into Gatwa, who will play the Fifteenth. It’s a bold stroke that harkens back to the show’s glory days when Tennant was in the main role for real, back when Russell T Davies was running the show. Davies returned to take the helm for the upcoming special and season 14, so I’m sure that has something to do with it.

The other day, the official Doctor Who Twitter account gave us a look at what Gatwa will look like in costume. Check it out:

The orange shirt and matching jacket-and-pants combo is a little more muted than what the Doctor usually wears, although it does catch the eye. Meanwhile, that’s Millie Gibson as Ruby Sunday, the Fifteenth Doctor’s companion. Now is that a quirky name or what?

We’ll be waiting a while longer to see Tennant back in the role of the Doctor and to see Gatwa occupy it for the first time, but both will happen sometime in 2023.
