Netflix is investing $120 million into its live-action remake of Avatar: The Last Airbender, the animated fantasy that made a huge splash on Nickelodeon way back in 2005  TV show and has remained popular ever since. Netflix executive Peter Friedlander discussed the the remake with Variety, calling it a “stunning spectacle.”

"I think it’s going to be what you want it to be. It’s pretty special, just as an IP, it’s very special, something like ‘The Sandman,’ and we want to handle it with deft hands for fans and also bring new life to it in a way that both honors the original and celebrates its new iteration. It’s a stunning spectacle."

Netflix is hoping this massive gamble will redeem the last attempt at a live-action version of The Last Airbender: the 2010 movie from M. Night Shyamalan that was horribly received from all quarters.

Netflix’s Avatar remake vs Nickelodeon’s Avatar universe vs Avatar: The Way of Water

The cast for The Last Airbender is a healthy mix of newcomers like Gordon Cormier (Aang) and Kiawentiio (Katara), as well as acting veterans like Daniel Dae Kim (Ozai), Paul Sun-Hyung Lee (Iroh) and Ken Leung (Zhao). Principle photography wrapped earlier this year, with no release date officially announced. The first season will include 10 episodes.

The creators of the original Avatar cartoon, Michael DiMartino and Brian Konietzko, were originally on board to help produce the Netflix remake, but stepped away from the project in 2020 over creative differences. They decided to return to Nickelodeon to found Avatar Studios, where they are currently developing animated projects set in the Avatar world.
