House of the Dragon was one of the biggest new shows of 2022, which of course means we’re all eagerly waiting to see how the story continues. The season 1 finale, “The Black Queen,” left off with some huge cliffhangers, including what Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy) will do after learning of the death of her son Lucerys (Elliot Grihault) at the hands of her half-brother Aemond. The Dance of the Dragons is officially upon us.

While there’s no set release date for House of the Dragon season 2, the filming schedule is coming into focus. Actor Ewan Mitchell, who played Aemond Targaryen as an adult in the final three episodes of season 1, spoke to The Face about bringing the one-eyed villain to life. He also dropped some interesting tidbits about season 2 and Aemond’s role in it:

"So much of this season sees this family’s world balanced on a knife’s edge. All it’s going to take is a push from either side to draw blood. I guess Aemond is the guy who kickstarts the domino effect that’ll lead to the Dance of the Dragons. If season one was about seeing Aemond getting warmed up, season two is all-out war."

House of the Dragon season 2 will film for most of 2023

House of the Dragon season 2 will reportedly start filming in March 2023. Mitchell didn’t confirm that, but did reveal just how long the show is planning to shoot.

"We’re going to be shooting for eight months next year. We’re in the preparation phase of that now, which is why I’ve got my hair buzzed off, for the wig fittings."

Given the reported start date, that would mean House of the Dragon season 2 would wrap filming in October or possibly November of next year. It’s pretty easy to see why a 2023 release date just isn’t in the cards for House of the Dragon season 2. Moreover, this means we probably shouldn’t expect to see season 2 until at least mid-to-late 2024, considering how much post-production work is necessary to render all those dragons.

In the meantime, there’s always House of the Dragon season 1 to rewatch! House of the Dragon: The Complete First Season is now out on Blu-Ray.
